Pros and cons – sitting in your room vs sitting in the lounge

There are a few different types of train traveller – those who like to sit in their private room and watch the world go by; those who like to sit in the lounge and make new friends; and those who like to do a little of both.

We love finding out what sort of traveller you are on our train:

Those who travel together in a Twinette compartment who spend most of their time on the train happily secluded in their private compartment.

These guests, while on board the train, are very often found in their rooms enjoying not only the scenery but each other’s company. You might have a book that you have found in our on board lending library, or brought especially for the occasion. You might enjoy watching a movie or playing a game on your iPad or phone (we have wifi in every carriage on the train). You will almost certainly be enjoying the company of our Guest Attendants and having a cup of tea or coffee in your room accompanied by biscuits made by our on board chef, Scottie.

The Rooms are comfortable for a couple to spend time in and we have seen up to four guests enjoying each other’s company in these rooms! (we think three guests is more comfortable given there are three seats in these compartments).  Of course, the Lounge Carriage is always available for guests to spend time in, whether on their own or with others.

Those who travel together in our Roomette compartments.

These guests can be found chatting to each other across the corridor of the roomette carriages or sitting in each others’ room on the ‘dickie’ seat (actually the foot rest) at the end of the main chair. The roomette compartments are alternate facing rooms (one forward and one back) and if you are travelling with a companion, you can always spend time facing in the direction of travel.

The Lounge Carriage is always available for guests to spend time in.

Those who travel on their own in our Roomette compartments.

You can spend as much or as little time with other guests on board the train as you feel appropriate.

We have found that the Roomette compartments can be very sociable if that’s what guests are looking for. You can pop into the next door room for a chat with a guest or there is always the Guests Attendant if you are looking for a brief chat. The Lounge Carriage is always available for guests to spend time in, whether on their own or with others.

Those who spend most of their time in the Lounge Carriage.

We have some guests who love spending time in the Lounge Carriage, having a hot or cold beverage, chatting with other guests, reading a book (or perhaps knitting). The Lounge Carriage has panoramic windows at eye height, allowing guests to watch the scenery go by, other trains and sometimes see the locos or tail of our own train as it goes around a curve.

Of course, the way you choose to travel on our train is always up to you. Most guests enjoy the best of both worlds – spending time in their own compartment as well as spending time in the Lounge Carriage.
